Spotlight On Music: The Smiths

The Smiths were an English rock group active from 1982 to 1987. The group was based on the songwriting partnership of Morrissey and Johnny Marr, and were signed to the independent record label Rough Trade Records. Considered by some critics to be the most important alternative rock band to emerge from the British indie scene of the 1980s. The Smiths have had a major influence on subsequent alternative music, including the Britpop movement and bands such as The Stone Roses, Gene, Radiohead, Blur, Suede, Oasis, The Libertines, and Doves.

At the time, the group was notable in particular for two things: Morrissey's unusual, witty, and controversial lyrics, and Marr's music, which helped return guitar-based music to popularity after it had fallen out of favour in the UK charts. The group released a total of four studio albums and several compilations in fewer than five years, as well as numerous singles.

Camino Del Sol by Antena

Re-issue of the classic 1980s album "Camino Del Sol", recorded by French band Antena - 16 pieces of timeless music halfway in between Ultravoxx and Antonio Carlos Jobim. This is a true electro samba classic from 1982, originally released on Les Disques De Crepuscule, two tracks were produced by John Foxx (Ultravoxx). Angular and sensual.

Good Lord EP by Kormac

Kormac's 2nd Release on the Scribble label is entitled the 'Good Lord EP'. The EP is a follow up to 'Scratch Marchin' which got Dj support from DJ Yoda, Scruff, Craze, Joe Ransom plus more. Kormac has been hard at work producing his live show and developing his sound for this new installment of his Jazz-swing & Hip-hop trademark sound.

I Love You by Mathieu Boogaerts

I Love You, is the eighth album in the career of one of France’s most popular contemporary singers. The style is best described as a combination of dub, light grunge, funk, electronica, with a huge push towards the pop market. Mathieu's voice is gentle, and smooth, with the tracks often being minimalistic in approach. Very European, very French.

Candy Cigarette by Boy In Static

Musically, Boy In Static appeals to those who love electronica with soft-spoken vocals, which achingly work their way toward a zenith but never fully get there on purpose. The electronica works to get deep into the souls of its listeners because of the outstanding melodic appeal. It’s like that glimmer of hope you have when you can see the light in your life but something dramatic happens.

Grains by Boozoo Bajou

At first I wasn't sure how much I liked this album, it's quite different to their other stuff. There's sometimes a jazzy feel, still with the usual laid back tones, and the vocals on Same Sun & Messenger by Rumer were a surprise move at first listen, but I really think they work well.

Oulipo Saliva by Angil and the Hidden Tracks

Mickaƫl Mottet composed most of Oulipo Saliva's songs on a 1904 piano salvaged from a neighbouring clothes shop without being tuned. Mottet took the weirdly resounding piano as it was, following the example of John Cage's prepared instruments, and adapted his compositions to its strange, Tim-Burtonesque sound.
